The Parliament Wanted To End The Social Status Of Kashmir In September 1964 Itself

Jawahar Lal Nehru died on 27 May 1964. Less than four months later,on 11 Sep 1964, a Private Member’s bill was introduced by shri Prakash Vir Shashtri seeking to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution was introduced.

The Bill found unexpected support from Congress members of the Lok Sabha. Together with the opposition members, they pleaded that the time had come to end the uncertainty about the future of Jammu and Kashmir. A unanimous demand of the members was to do away with the Article 370, which as per them had outlived it’s utility.

Shri M K Hanumanthaiya of Congress even appealed to rhe Home Minister to accept the Bill and get ut passed by the House.
It has taken the Lok Sabha nearly 54 years and 11 months to study the Bill and finally pass it wuth 2/3 majority.
