USA Ambassador Sergio Gor calls upon Shri Jaishankar to shore up US ties

Sergio Gor has just been confirmed by the American Senate as the US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. As the ties between USA and India have plunged down rapidly because of Trump’s various unfriendly actions, Gor has rushed on a six-day visit to India following his Senate confirmation, accompanied by US Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas.
He is expected to be formally permitted by Govt of India to present his credentials and take up his post at a later date, possibly in January 2026.
The first thing Sergio Gor has done is to call upon Shri S Jaishankar on October 11, 2025, at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. During the meeting, he explained his understanding of the various aspects of the downslide in the India-US relationship and its increasing effect on global happenings. Shri Jaishankar wished Gor all the success in his new role.
Thereafter Sergio called upon Shri Vikram Misri, the Foreign Secretary. Their discussions centered on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and shared priorities, and the exchanges were described as productive. Shri Misri also wished Gor success in his assignment.
Gor had earlier interacted with Shri Jaishankar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 24, where the Ambassador had reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the bilateral strategic partnership.
During his Senate confirmation hearing on September 12, Gor had highlighted the “deep friendship” between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a unique strength in advancing bilateral ties. He had emphasised India’s position as a strategic partner who shapes regional and provides global stability. Gor pledged to prioritise deepening defence and security cooperation with India if confirmed.
The timing of Gor’s appointment comes amid declining trade following the Trump administration’s unilateral imposition of steep tariffs on Indian exports, including a 50% tariff and additional duties because of India’s outright trashing of Trump’s lunatic dictates of stopping imports of Russian crude oil.
These American actions have caused a downside in bilateral relations but ongoing negotiations for a possible new trade deal have recently resumed after a brief pause, with positive signals.
Gor’s calling upon the Foreign Ministry are viewed as important steps by Washington to stabilise and strengthen the US-India strategic partnership across trade, defence, and technology domains. Amid the tantrums of Trump, the US State Department stated that their goal is to promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific through this partnership.
Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor calling on Shri Jaishankar underscores the USA desperation to enhance the India-US relationship despite current trade challenges, focusing on strategic cooperation in defence, trade, and regional stability.
