China-India ties improve over last year

General Upendra Dwivedi on Monday said that China-India relations have improved a lot over the last year, attributing to a rise in communication at various levels between the two countries, as reported in the media.

“In the last one year, we have done 1,100 ground level interactions. That is, three interactions every day,” General Dwivedi said, the New Indian Express reported Monday.

Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue Curtain Raiser event at Manekshaw Convention Centre in New Delhi, General Dwivedi said, “I would like to say that there has been a lot of change in the last year. From October 2024 to today, there has been a lot of improvement in our relations,” the New Indian Express reported.

The Times of India reported Monday that General Dwivedi said the improved bilateral relations came after dialogue among the leaders of the two countries to usher in “normalcy” last October, with military commanders on the ground also regularly meeting to resolve local issues.

In October 2024, during his meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the two sides should strengthen communication and cooperation, properly manage differences and disagreements, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two leaders met again on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin this August when Xi pointed out that the successful meeting in Kazan last year enabled the China-India relations to have a reset and start anew, and bilateral exchanges and cooperation have since made new progress.

PM Modi said that the relationship is back on a positive trajectory, peace and stability in the border regions have been maintained, and direct flights are about to be resumed, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on August 31.

Xinhua reported on August 19 that China and India on Monday agreed to maintain momentum of bilateral ties, a consensus reached during talks between visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
