Hungary will not support energy sanctions against Russia

Mihaly Varga stressed that spreading the sanctions to this segment would pose the most serious threat to the Hungarian national currency

Budapest is unprepared to support the idea of putting the energy sector on the list of the European Union’s anti-Russian sanctions, Reuters quoted Hungarian Finance Minister Mihaly Varga as saying.

He stressed that spreading the sanctions to this segment would pose the most serious threat to the Hungarian national currency.

Varga said the EU’s restrictive measures had already caused considerable damage to his country’s economy, including the forint. On Monday, the Hungarian currency plummeted to a record low against the euro (399 forints per 1 euro from the previous day’s 385 forints).

Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24 launched a special military operation in Ukraine in response to a request for help from the Donbass republics. He said Moscow had no plans for an occupation of Ukraine.

After that the United States, the European Union and Britain, as well as a number of other countries, including Japan said they were imposing sanctions on Russian individuals and legal entities.
