“We see BRICS as an important instrument for the broader promotion of multilateralism on the basis of sovereign equality,” Shafqat Ali Khan said

On July 8, a highly frustrated US President Donald Trump announced he will impose additional 10% tariffs on countries that support “anti-American” BRICS policies.

Trump seems to have forgotten that Intra BRICS trades now itself has surpassed USD 1 trillion and continues to grow. This trade covers oil, agricultural products, rare earth materials and other commodity markets. It is also working on environmental governance and more efficient and sustainable global supply chain.

BRICS+ accounts for 65 % of the world’s population, and 30 % of the world’s landmass. The economy of the BRICS has risen by more than 400% since 2019 and BRICS+ share of world GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) is nearly 40%. BRICS+ countries have over 1500 satellites in orbit and have nearly 50 percent of existing internet users worldwide.

Brazil, India, and China are among the world’s ten largest countries by population, area and gross domestic product (GDP, nominal and PPP).

All five initial member states have a combined nominal GDP of USD 28.3 trillion (about 28% of the gross world product), a total GDP (PPP) of around US$68 trillion (40 % of global GDP PPP). ] The expanded BRICS+ generates 40 % of global GDP.

BRICS+ oil production is more than 30% of global oil output. BRICS contribute over 45% of the global agricultural products and these countries produce 42% of the world’s wheat, 52% of rice, and 46% of soybeans.

In spite of Trump Pakistan is still very keen on joining BRICS, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Shafqat Ali Khan said.

“We remain focused and serious about our membership in BRICS. This is not conditioned by any other country’s opinion or sentiment toward this organization,” he told reporters. “We see BRICS as an important instrument for the broader, as we say, promotion of multilateralism on the basis of sovereign equality. It is an important organization. And we continue our efforts to become a full member.”

However India will just not permit entry of Pakistan into BRICS till they completely denounce terrorism, eradicate all terror infrastructure from their soil and hand over all the wanted terrorists to India.

BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining it in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates also became members, and so did Indonesia on January 6, 2025.
