Peru’s parliament votes to oust president
The motion was supported by 101 lawmakers with six voting against and 10 abstaining
On Wednesday, Peru’s Congress voted to impeach President Pedro Castillo who earlier announced the dissolution of the legislature and the introduction of a curfew. Lawmaker Edward Malaga Trillo, who initiated the motion, expressed the opinion that the president’s activity had “signs of corruption.”.
The motion was supported by 101 lawmakers with six voting against and 10 abstaining. First Vice President Dina Boluarte will be sworn in as the republic’s president, according to the Congress’ decision aired by the RPP radio station on its YouTube channel.
According to the radio station, Castillo and his family members left the presidential residence following his announcement of the parliament’s dissolution.
Peruvian police have already detained President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office by the national parliament, El Comercio daily reported on Wednesday.
The daily published a photo of Castillo in a police station. According to the newspaper, he is in Lima, Peru’s capital.
Peru’s First Vice President Dina Boluarte has been sworn in office as head of state by the Congress, which earlier voted for the resignation of President Pedro Castillo.
The ceremony was broadcasted on the parliament’s Twitter account on Wednesday.
