Sri Lanka seeks India’s help in evacuating people from conflict-ridden Iran

Sri Lanka has sought India’s assistance in the evacuation of its citizens in Iran which is now engaged in a war with Israel, the Daily Mirror learns.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry, upon request by the Sri Lanka Foreign Affairs Ministry, has now offered assistance to evacuate Sri Lankan students from Iran under India’s Operation Sindhu.

The Indian Embassy in Iran evacuated 110 Indian students from northern Iran, assisted them in safely crossing over into Armenia on 17 June 2025. The students were then taken to the Armenian capital, Yerevan from where a special flight brought them back to New Delhi in the early hours of June 19.

India has offered to assist in the process of evacuation of Sri Lankans, so far as the Sri Lankan nationals can reach a location from where it is feasible to cross borders. The two countries’ resident embassies are in touch in this regard.
