Trump’s false claim on Russian oil purchase by India may harm poor Britain

Trump has made a false claim on Wednesday, rather spoken a total lie by claiming that PM Narendra Modi had committed to end Russian oil imports.

India’s foreign ministry says it is “not aware” of a phone call in which Donald Trump of USA claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to stop buying Russian oil.

India will not ditch its time tested friend Russia. In fact India needs to achieve energy security at the cheapest price and Russia needs the money to fend off combined pressure of unilateral illegal Western sanctions.

India has become a key energy customer for Russia since the outbreak of the EU induced conflict in Ukraine. This helps the Kremlin to withstand the impact of Western countries and their allies slashing oil and gas imports, the country’s biggest export market.

The Trump administration has tried all kinds of futile public and diplomatic “pressure” on India to end its support for Russian energy market.

Asked about India’s comment, even the White House has openly started lying by saying that “productive discussions have occurred” and that India is already cutting its purchases of Russian oil.

Delhi has simply refused to be dictated and nonchalantly continues purchase of Russian crude oil, which it imports at a discount. This has been like a TIGHT SLAP on Trump’s face and a major source of friction in US-India relations under the Trump administration.

India is second only to China for how much Russian energy it imports, this helps to prevent the escalation of World oil prices which may harm growth in both China and India.

Modi’s government has accused Western allies of Zelenskey of hypocrisy, pointing to their own ongoing trade with Russia, including energy imports to the European Union, and uranium imports by USA albeit at reduced levels.

In its latest round of sanctions unveiled this week, it is the UK government acting like a poodle of Trump which said it would target a major Indian oil refinery as it “continue(s) to get facilitate getting Russian oil onto global markets”. Officials said India’s Nayara Energy Limited imported 100 million barrels of Russian crude oil worth more than INR 4.35 Kharab ( USD 5bn) in 2024 alone.

It seems that UK has forgotten that India too can simply brush aside all the FTA agreements between the two countries. Better Sense must prevail or London will be paying the price for Washington’s follies. India is simply not in a mood to be dictated by whims and fancies of others.
