Catholic Church in Sri Lanka trying to play politics

The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka playing politics says that it will not accept the apology tendered by former President Maithripala Sirisena on the shortcomings in preventing the Easter Sunday bomb attacks. The National Director Communications Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Jude Chryshantha Fernando said today.

Speaking to the media Fr. Fernando said the Former President will have to go to jail for failing to prevent the attack. If this is not politics then what it is ?

“Former President Sirisena has said there were bomb explosions all over the nation during the war and no probe has been carried out on those terror attacks. He should remember that prior warnings have been issued on the Easter Sunday bombings. Places, where the attacks would take place, were also known. Therefore, President Sirisena cannot get away from the responsibility,” Fr. Fernando said.

The Catholic Church, would have forgiven former President Maithripala Sirisena if he had accepted his shortcoming and resigned the day after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, a spokesman for the church said today. This is clearly trying to play politics.

“ We would have forgiven the former President if he had resigned from the post the very next day after the bomb attacks after accepting the shortcomings on his part,” Archdiocese of Colombo social communications unit Member Fr. Cyril Gamni Fernando said today.

“What Mr. Sirisena should have done is to accept the shortcomings which he is responsible for. This has been proved by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court’s verdict clearly states that the former president’s failure has caused a great destruction to the nation. This has caused the loss of lives and property,” Fr Gamini said quoting the verdict.

“Mr. Sirisena should have admitted his faults before apologizing,” he added.

“We are willing to forgive everyone who is responsible but we need to know the truth behind the failure to prevent the attacks after receiving prior information on the impending attack,” he also said.

“Former President Sirisena has also said Catholics of Sri Lanka will forgive him and welcome him. We therefore, request him to go among the Catholics in Kochcikade and Negombo and prove that he is welcomed.

Also he has said he pleads for forgiveness on behalf of God. Is he God’s representative to make such a statement?” he added. (Yohan Perera)
