“Group of Friends” in Defence of UN Charter : Unilateral sanctions are illegal

According to the ministry, the meeting helped assess the considerable progress in the process of enhancing coordination among the group’s members within international format, first of all in the United Nations.

Member countries of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter have stressed the inadmissibility of illegal unilateral sanctions, the Russian foreign ministry said on Sunday. The comments came on the results of the November 5 meeting of the group’s national coordinators in Tehran, which was attended by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin.

“In the course of the meeting, members of the association confirmed their commitment to the generally recognized norms of international law enshrines in the UN Charter, including the principles of sovereign equality of states and non-interference into their domestic affairs,” the ministry stressed.

“The spoke in concert against attempts by some countries to undermine the UN-centric system of international relations and substitute it for the so-called rule-based order. Special focus was made on the inadmissibility of the malpractice of illegal unilateral coercive measures and other manifestations of neo-colonialism.”

According to the ministry, the meeting helped assess the considerable progress in the process of enhancing coordination among the group’s members within international format, first of all in the United Nations.

“Agreements were reached on further actions on international matters of mutual interest, and on joint events within the world organization. The meeting yielded a political declaration, which reflects the association’s approaches to the most topical global issues,” the ministry added.
