Japan to set up a new organisation for space related business

A new Japanese organization set up to expand space-related business activities for the country has detailed how it plans to do so, prior to beginning operations in April.

Cross U outlined its vision at a news conference on Monday.

The organization was set up last year by major real estate firm Mitsui Fudosan, which runs facilities in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi to encourage business activities in space. Cross U has also signed a cooperation deal with Japan’s space agency JAXA.

Cross U said it plans to help firms and universities that engage in space-related business and research create networks and share knowhow through events and other measures.

Cross U stressed the importance of collaboration with companies in a variety of sectors such as food, automobiles and construction.

The organization said it intends to encourage such companies to get involved in business opportunities in space by offering them advice.

Cross U is headed by Professor Nakasuka Shinichi of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School. He said he hopes to enlarge the market for space business by getting companies and organizations in different fields to work together.
